How to trun off spell check /autocomplete

I just got my first Android phone (N1), and like it so far. There are a few things that drive me up the wall, though.

One of them is the 'autocomplete' (not sure what it's called): where Android suggests words as you type a text message. Great when I'm typing English, not so great when using other languages. Can this be turned off?

I'd recommend leaving spell check on. lol

Check the settings under Locale and Text.

on the n1 if i long press the 123 key I get the keyboard settings where you can turn autocomplete and suggestions off

Question, though: is there a Android / N1 manual? The N1 came with nothing, and I can't find anything on the google.com/phone/support site either (other than a few videos).
