Hi, my wife has brought my old HTC Desire 510 back into use! However, much software won't run on Android 4.4.3. I have run the software update and it says no updates available. Anyway to get a later version on the phone, please?

Yeah, I've done a bit of checking and can't find any official software newer than 4.4.3 for that model.
In terms of custom software (which requires you learning how to unlock and root the device), if you are prepared to give up the HTC interface and apps then over at XDA I've found one unofficial build of CyanogenMod-12, which is based on Android 5.1. The developer has long since stopped supporting it, so it would be take it as you find it, and make sure you know how to restore the original software if it doesn't work because there will be no fixes. 5.1 is also pretty old, so I'm not sure I'd think it worth the effort myself, but that's the only thing I can find that's newer.
