How to use old Verizon Droid 2 Global device on ST for free

(After submitting the thread I realized, my headline reads as if I want free ST service. Itis not what I meant. I want a free app/method to make this particular phone to operate with ST service. Otherwise, I am willing to and will pay the $45/mo for their *unlimited* service fee)

I have read about the kit that one can buy from walmart and "flash" the phone for use with ST but considering my phone is already close to the end of its useful life, I do not want to invest another $60 to make it work with ST. I just want to test the service before I commit to buying a new phone. I am currently using Virgin Mobile and at work, where I will need the data usage the most (due to draconian bluecoat filtering), VM service suck. I am lucky if I can get a single bar.

I was wondering if there are any free way to make it work with ST, as in rooting it or something similar. I attempted a couple of searches but nothing related came up.

Thank you in advance.

Best bet is to find someone with an ST phone on Verizon and see what the signal is like there. But IIRC, Virgin uses Verizon, and if the signal is bad with Virgin it'll be bad with any Verizon mvno.

None that I know of. The best way would be what Rukbat said: find someone with a ST phone on Verizon. Or checking the signal with a Verizon phone, since more people have Verizon.

Virgin Mobile uses Sprint, so Verizon could have a better (or worse) signal.

Thanks for the responses. Yes I know I can find someone with a verizon phone and check the signal levels on their phones. BTW, I have already done this. The reason I want to flash this phone is to use it on ST service and see the glitches in performance. As we all know, 5 out of 5 bars doesn't necessarily mean that one will get the best service. Especially considering, I need the data portion of this ST service more than any other aspect. So, I need to use the service for 2-3 months to decide if it will be my MVNO for the long(er) term.
