How to use soft keyboard in 'Contact'?

I've upgraded my 'Google Dev Phone 1' to 1.5 cupcake.

In 'Contact', I can use the QWERTY keyboard to type initials to quick search names. However I don't know how to open soft keyboard to do it. Any one knows how to do it?

(The only way I can find is press 'Menu' then select 'search', then tap on the text field to open soft keyboard)

By tapping in the search field or any text input, it will pop right up.

But I have to press 'Menu' and then 'Search'. With the slide out keyboard, I can simply start typing.

like Devolio said tap the input area and the keyboard should just open up....
