How to view Google Navigation or G.Maps walking in Map rather than Satellite

I'm in Europe and actually trying to bicycle using Google Navigator or Google Maps on my Android 2.2 Samsung Galaxy. I don't have a Bicycle option on it either. When I select walking rather than car I always get the satellite view which is impossible to read while on my bike. Its too dark to see in daylight and also won't zoom close enough while in walking navigation mode. Is there any way to adjust the setting so I see the "map view" after I select "walking" for directions? For now I just have to use the navigation for the car which not good since I can bicycle many places the car can't go. In most of the places I'm at it's not a problem to bicycle on the sidewalks when there aren't bike paths. I would rather use this pedestrian view than one that just lists official bike paths. Unfortunately I can't see it in Satellite view. Thanks if someone can tell me how to select map view in walking directions.
