HTC Desire 626 data card stopped working

I've been using my HTC desire 626 on ATT android for about 2 years. Always store music movies and maps on the data card, which is about 50% of 32GB full. Yesterday the data card stopped being recognized. Have tried all possible combinations or removing the card, inserting the card, and rebooting. Also tried reformatting the card to no avail. When I insert the card in my computer it works fine so it isn't the card. When I do settings/storage/mount SD card get a message "SD card is safe to remove"

Oddly enough, when I grabbed a 2gb card from an old phone in the closet and it worked fine. Perhaps the high address line pin is wacked, since the card is approximately 50% full? Going to stop by the store this evening and pick up a new 32GB card ands see if that solves my problem.

Is there a way, on android 5.1, to format the SD card for internal storage and use it for apps as well as data files? I've seen rumblings in other threads about reformatting the card to do this., but I didn't see an options in settings->Storage. Is it a sub option beneath the format command?

That was introduced in Android 6. With 5.1 all you can do is partially move apps to SD using the Settings, or root, partition the card and use the extra partition for app storage (Link2SD or various init.d scripts).

I purchased a new data card the same size and manufacturer. Works fine. An IT friend of mine agreed to mess with the old card and see if he could determine what had happened to it. I'll post up any further information as it comes in.
