HTC Desire and Android Vanilla possible?

I am still awaiting the arrival of my HTC Desire, but while reading up on Android I see that HTC is very slow on updates if they come at all.

If HTC does not update to Froyo as expected or kills the updates after Froyo, is it then possible to run Android Vanilla on this phone?

It is the responsibility of the carriers to issue the update. Android gets updated all the time, in the 18 or so months it's been out it's had 5 updates including 2.2.

The carriers are very likely to update, who would want to go with someone who never updates your phone? The problem is they want to tinker with it and remove features like free tethering, so they can charge for it themselves.

Ok, but my main question remains. Is it straight forward to install Android Vanilla on Desire since it is almost identical to nexus one?

Yes it is. Look in the Desire forum, in the subform "All thing root" for more information.

Note there are always risks with rooting and such, but it is generally a simple process.

It does take quite a bit of time (mainly download files) but if you do it right then it will work perfectly well.

There are a few good android 2.2 roms on the XDA forum.
