HTC Desire HD: Market unavailable, want to install apps

Hello all,

I just bought an HTC Desire HD and I love the phone. However, I currently seem to have a couple of things working against me:

1. I live in Turkey and am operating with Turkish Vodafone, which means that I have no access to the Android Market/any paid apps.
2. I have a Mac.

I am currently trying to install Skype with a .apk file from a third-party Web site. However, while I have the .apk file, I don't know how to access/install it on the phone. I've found various File organizer applications which are supposed to install .apk, but in order to install THOSE, I am always directed to the Market (even though they are free).

I was told that I should use HTC Sync to run the files, but this doesn't seem to be available for Mac. So...please, someone tell me how to access the .apk files on my phone without having to use the Market in any way? I've been running in circles here for days.

I'm currently visiting someone in France and am considering buying a French SIM card just to have access to the market. Would the DLed apps still work once I change back to the Turkish SIM?

Thanks all!
