HTC Desire

It does look very nice! I am currently in the market for a new phone and eyeing this or the Supreme. Both look good (definitely either one is a huge upgrade from my Kyocera Rise). My current phone does everything I need it to, but it's short on memory and not really sure why it doesn't connect (weak antennae) or something, when my wife's EVO is going great guns in the same room. It's time! LOL!

Meh, not impressed. Only qHD resolution in 2013? If they could get this thing down to $175 or so I might consider, but certainly not at $279. Lets see what they do for black friday.

Based on the user manual, it does have a removable battery, which is good news. I thought at some point it was said that it was like the HTC One, and had a sealed battery.

Is it my imagination or are the specs either equal to or just slightly better than the EVO V? I see no reason to move from my EVO to this phone.

That it supports LTE is alone enough reason to upgrade, if you are in a market with LTE.

I'm gonna guess the camera is better too, since the evo camera is pretty poor. Also jellybean and the more current HTC software like Zoe. Better battery life. Thinner and lighter.Yes processor and screen are similar. If they put a beefier processor in or 1080 screen, it would be twice the price. It would be the one, or the one mini.

Camera has same specs. 5mp.

I see at least one VM reviewer said "it's VM's version of the HTC one" which AFAIK is just wrong. So it's got boom sound. (just a marketing gimmick). It does not appear to have a one piece aluminum body nor a quad core processor. It may have some software features of the one but I think that reviewer is wrong.
I think you could say this compares to the HTC one the same way the Galaxy S III compares to the S 4?

Bought this for $180 during Cyber Monday on VM's site. I think it's quite good for the price. They had the S3 for $250 but I didn't want to spend that much. I think it's a safer purchase than the ZTE Supreme that was for $150.

The phone seems very responsive and good so far. Yes the resolution is not HD, but it looks fine to me. I wouldn't buy it at full price though ($280), because you might as well go for the S3 at that point which is clearly superior.

My one complaint is that it apparently doesn't have a compass sensor. WTF?

Different strokes for different folks, but I don't see why you would object. It looks just like the one, minus the high end features. It is a budget version of the htc flagship, and vm is a budget carrier. If, when the htc one 2 came out, and vm got the old one, then that would be like your samsung comparison. The s3 is not a budget version of the s4, it is the predecessor to the s4. The 601 is specifically made to be similar to the one but cheaper. Reducing resolution, cpu, and case material (and camera specs) is what has to be done to sell the phone at the price point it's at.

Also, while the term boom sound may be a gimmick, those speakers are better than any other phone I've heard. Now beats, there's a gimmick for you, that everyone seems to lap up anyway.

I can already tell you Boom sound is not a gimmick, when I play bass heavy music im surprised my phone actually can drop the bass. Of course considering a pair of subs need a lot of power and air don't expect these to shake car or a house XD. They have the best lows, mids, and highs then any phone I owned(which are all listed on my profile). As for beats audio...that's a gimmick but I listen to bass heavy songs so I just leave it on. Now if I was still on VM I would actually get the HTC desire since HTC devices are HQ and premium over the other cheaper phones.

What I was objecting to is the statement "it's VM's version of the HTC one" which by most definitions should mean the HTC one with a Virgin Mobile logo on the case and VM software- not a completely different phone with across the board inferior hardware to the HTC one. It's a different phone.
I was not in any way implying it's a bad phone, it's just not the same as an HTC one.
If he said "it's a budget cousin similar to the HTC one" well okay that's accurate.
If I said the VM galaxy S3 was "virgin mobile's version of the S3" that is an accurate statement and as you point out the S3-S4 comparison I made was wrong- I guess I meant if you compared specs on is obviously much better.
Hopefully that clears that up.

FWIW I'm getting a new phone this week, I ordered an iphone4 8g from radio shack with the black friday deal. It's supposed to be at my house by this wednesday, if and when it gets there I'm not going to open it and just take it to Radio Shack and apply the $100 to a better android phone.
(I found out in the last week that San Diego is FINALLY getting 4lte finished in the next few months, which changes everything and I know I'll soon regret having the 3g iphone-currently most of the area still on 3g)
With RadioShack having the galaxy s3 on sale for $299 I think that is worth the extra money even if the HTC desire can be had on sale for $100 less at VM's site. The S3 IMO has a better display, among other things.
One of the driving factors for me is the popularity of the S3. Will have no problem finding cases and accessories and support is plentiful. The HTC desire likely will never have that.
