Help htc one m8 turn off emoticons

Hello since the last big update for the HTC one m8 came out I think at the start of the start of the year its seems to have automatically turned on some auto detection emoticon thing where all my messages if they have the right order of symbols make an emoticon. I want to turn this off as it extremely annoying...mostly because I volunteer for a fire department and our county sends out staffing updates and incident messages and they have the time occasional line of text that turns into an emoticon which is extremely annoying.

So basically is therE an option to turn them off in the default message app?

I don't think so but Chomp has it under settings, more stuff.
