HTC One M9 Lost Data and Internet Connectivity

We were traveling by car from Atlanta towards Fayetteville, NC along I-20 and I-95 between 1800-2330 on Sunday, 20 Dec. My phone lost the ability to connect to Waze because it lost the data connection. It also l0st wi-fi connectivity. An icon appeared on the status bar next to the data connectivity icon hat resembled a padlock with a keyhole. I contacted HTC and AT&T today and got no answer regrding the meaning of the icon. I restarted the phone 6 or 7 times with no success on Sunday and Monday while traveling. I was unable to get power even when I arrived in the northern VA area at 2030 on Monday night. I had to do a factory reset today to restore the phone's data and internet capability. NOTE: I was able to place and receive calls.

My wife has the same phone with similar apps on board. Her phone worked properly during the time that mine did not. That leads me to believe that the problem was with my phone.

Has anyone experienced the icon of the padlock next to the data indicator? Does anyone know what it means?

Was the padlock icon WITH the signal bars icon, like a part of it? Or just next to it? And how close to next to it? Directly next to it or a bit down the notification bar?

Were you utilizing Bluetooth at the time? There is a padlock icon for 'Smart Lock' that comes up when you pair Bluetooth with a new peripheral
Looks like something like this (may vary with software versions or updates):

PyroSporker, thanks for responding.
I was using Bluetooth at the time. My phone was active with the phone function in the car.
The padlock was adjacent to the signal indicator, immediately to the left. It was a locked padlock with a keyhole shape in the center. This phone had been paired with the car for a few months since it replaced one whose camera lens was broken.
