HTC One Stock vs HTC One Nexus

Shazamy

I want to buy a new phone soon and the HTC One is on my radar. I've had the HTC Sensation for the last 2 years and it's been alright but I didn't really like the Sense software so I rooted it a few months ago and I prefer the stock android although I'm having some minor issues with it that are becoming more annoying every day. I know these issues won't be a problem if I buy the Nexus version of the HTC One but since it's not out yet I'm wondering what your opinion is on whether the Nexus version will be better than the One that's already out WITH the Sense software since I've read that it's much improved.

Thanks in advance for any input :D

Define 'better' :D

If you have to have the slickest possible performance and (likely) faster updates of stock android, then the 'nexus' version of the HTC One is the one for you.

If you like the kinda cool features of Sense - and there are plenty - and are prepared to put up with marginally (though maybe not noticably) slower response and (likely) slower updates, then the standard One would be the best bet.

Personally, I'd probably go for the standard version as you get to check out the latest version of Sense but always have the option of rooting if you decide you don't like it :D

Also, do you know if and when your carrier (assuming you're buying subsidised) is going to get the 'nexus' version ..?

If you live in the US, there are also the options of the SIM unlocked and Developer editions. They are easier to root than carrier branded Ones or, if you don't want to root, then at least they're free of carrier specific bloatware and get updates directly from HTC which are generally faster than Carrier versions.

Thanks for the quick reply SiempreTuna :D

I do prefer the phone to have the smoothest, lag free operation possible but I understand that even with Sense on it the One is just so damn fast with the quad core cpu and 2gb of ram that it's smooth sailing no matter what you do, which is great.
I'm with T-Mobile so either way I'm buying it unsubsidized.

I'm a little on the fence when it comes to rooting my phone by myself because the HTC Sensation I have now is rooted and it's having all sorts of issues with the most basic operations like text messages constantly failing to send and calls sounding like I'm trying to communicate with alien life forms. I'm sure this can all be fixed by installing a proper ROM but I rather avoid that altogether, hence why I was thinking of waiting for the "nexus" HTC One.
I know HTC put a lot of effort into their new camera software and hardware and I'm wondering if with the Nexus version will I still be able to utilize their new camera software? seeing as it's a pretty unique camera (in terms of not just shoving as many megapixels as possible).

I guess what I'm trying to figure out, is since the HTC is so highly regarded and many reviewers are saying it's the best android phone out there right now, I want to know if the hardware alone (with stock android) losses it's pazzaz? Or is it the software on top of the hardware that really makes the One extraordinary?

I believe the latter part of your question is correct.
The hardware of the HTC One is amazing. That, plus the features of Sense 5 make it even more awesome.

If you really want a nexus experience, then go for the Nexus One. I personally would go for the regular One and flash a ROM if I wanted an AOSP-style look, but since you don't want to root your phone, it's a little tough of a decision.

And if choose the Nexus HTC One, you apparently will lose features like Zoe:

The HTC One Google edition is possibly going to get confusing considering HTC also made the real Nexus One 3 years ago

Thanks again for all the great comments!
I'm thinking I may be better off just going with the regular (non nexus) HTC One. It seems from what I managed to find online that the cheapest way to go about getting an unlocked One is straight from the HTC site for $600. I was wondering if anyone knows of a cheaper way to get one?
On Amazon and Newegg it's more expensive :/

Yeah, I wonder if HTC/Google forgot about that fact when they announced/named it because of what a failure it was :p
Define "failure".

Its availability was more limited than the N4 (which was the first Nexus to get Play Store sales outside the US) or even the GNex, and the price was higher. Either they didn't have their game together, or that really was intended as a dev phone, while with the N4 they've made much more effort with the mass market.
