Help HTC One X (Help Please!)

Lurker
First off I would like to say hello as I am new to the forums. I just bought my first Android device (HTC One X) and I really like it so far. It is the Asian version and I am just having a few problems though.

First off, I see that I have a new update when I download it just fine but when I install it I get "E: Unknown volume for path, Can't mount INTERNAL SDCARD Download. E: signature verification failed. Installation aborted"
This also came up with the Clockworkmod manager and I wondered how my brand new device had this. After a little bit of research I found out about rooting and I check my if my device was rooted and to my shock it was. I am not worried about it being rooted because I have heard that it is a good thing but how is my new device rooted and etc?

If anyone can help me update my HTC One X that would be great.

Also anyone trying to help please speak in some terminology I can understand haha. I am new to Android coming from Apple.

I've never heard of a brand new retail unit being supplied rooted with clockwork mod recovery on it?

As it is rooted - OTA updates will not work - you should switch off the auto check to get rid of the reminders.

You will need to look at custom roms over on xda instead. This is likely to get new updates faster, but will take more work getting them flashed to your phone - at least until you get used to it.

But - again, are you sure this phone is new?

The phone's box was sealed when I got it but while I was looking some phones they opened up boxes and the phones had already been turned on. I am in Pakistan right now and I am almost sure they are all like this, but hey I am getting it for about $100 USD cheaper.

Anyway I don't see any other problems with it but is the process of unrooting it hard? I would like to do it so I can update. Besides that I did a reset from clockwork mod recovery and I got the first time startup and I set everything up. Now I would like to unroot it but I am hoping the process isn't difficult. Is there any simple way to do it?

Well, it seems you got a used set. I am not aware of any market where any phone maker sells rooted phones let alone HTC.

If possible, contact htc and let them know of this. Since, you need to get the root code from their website they can easily tell when was you phone rooted.

I will not accept a rooted phone though i may root it later if i need.

Never had to un root - but I'd give it some thought before you do it.

Why do you want to do this? Is it just to get the update? There are roms over on xda which are more advanced/ newer than whatever is available from carriers. You can back up your app data using ti backup or similar, which makes the process of swapping roms much simpler. Don't restore system data though. You don't then need to be worried about getting the latest update ever again - xda will always be ahead.

I think there are two ways to un root. You should have an app called Su user or similar. This is the app which controls root. Somewhere in the settings there should be an option to remove root. However, as your software may have been modified, there is no guarantee that updates will work after this, and you will then need to root it again so you can back it up/ try newer roms.

The other option is to flash what is called the ruu file for your carrier. This will wipe the phone and restore it to an 'as new' state. This will remove root - but updates should work. You won't have access to apps such as ti backup to restore data until you root it again.

I know getting the update notification and not being able to update is like having an itch you can't scratch, but really recommend you think about this - and do some reading and research in the root section. Really - there is no rush!

Do I just call their customer support number for this?

Yes, that is exactly why I wanted to unroot but this is stuff I like to hear. Can you link to me some instructions on this or something, that would be extremely helpful!

Well this is a massive topic. First port of call should be the 'all things root' forum at the top of the page.

Just checking - you have the international (tegra) version? If so - the xda guide is here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1603905

There are also lists of various roms you can try.

Read carefully - and you would probably be better starting a new thread on any specific issues in the root forum.

Good luck and have fun if you decide to go for it!

I went to the store I bought the One X from and found out there were many more problems with it. I got the clerk to open up a new box and I checked everything out and it came out fine. Thanks you Coos, you have been a great help! If you could help me with one more thing now haha, my new One X got a gray stuck pixel about 30 minutes after use. I'm not if its a dead pixel or dust but after looking at it for a good time I think its a pixel. I also read other One X problems with dead/stuck pixels. If you know anything to find one stuck pixel that works more then it doesn't, please share! :)

I love the One X but these little problems are starting to be a bother... I am used to stuck pixels though, I have had bad luck with them started with my original Nintendo DS way back haha!

Yes, you can get in touch HTC customer care.

Even if you want to install a ROM and all that it is good if you it on a new set, as you have paid for a new one and not on a used one.

I went to the store clerk and explained to him everything. He gladly opened up a new set and I examined it carefully before exchanging it :)

Anyways after like about 30 minutes use it got a stuck pixel so if you know any tricks that can get one out that actually work, please share!

How can you identify one stuck pixel ? It can be more than one.

Manufacturers have guidelines for dead pixels. If there are certain number of pixels dead/stuck that does not come under replacement.

You should contact HTC regarding this. If it comes under their guidelines than they will replace your unit.

Prakhardeep is right. If there is a dead pixel, then I would check on getting a replacement. The screen is one of the best bits - you want to enjoy it.

Maybe the store can do another replacement?
