Help HTC One X Screen Turns On Randomly

Hi all,

I know this seems to be a common issue but I have been trolling these forums and some others for a while now and I can't seem to find a satisfactory answer.

I have an HTC One X and it has a problem with the screen turning on every 10 seconds or so. I'm running Android OS 4.2.2 and I'm with Vodafone in Australia. I would just take it back and get it replaced but unfortunately, when I went to do so, it got dropped and there was a slight crack in the display glass. Vodafone said they can't do anything because the problem is due to the "damage" however, this problem existed beforehand.

There seems to be two schools of thought about why this occurs: a) some rogue app is causing the screen to wake, or b) the pins in the USB port are misaligned in some way that is causing the phone to think it's being repeatedly plugged in/unplugged causing the screen to wake. Anyhow, I've done some troubleshooting and this is what I've come up with.

First off, I did a factory reset. I went through the set-up screens and enabled as little as possible (didn't connect to wi-fi, didn't set up a Google account, etc.). The problem still existed. The only way I could get the problem to cease was to plug the phone into a computer. If it was plugged into the wall charger, it still happened, and if it just had the cable plugged into the phone (with the USB end free) it still occured.

So, I think I've come to the decision that it's probably the pins but I wanted to get some advice before I started messing with them. Also, if anyone has any tips regarding adjusting/cleaning the pins, I'd love to hear it. Thanks in advance!

The best you can do as far as the "pins" is making sure that the center bar is centered. Since you can plug the cable in, it probably is. Using a very strong light and a very strong magnifying glass, look for ANY dirt, dust, etc., between what looks like the pins (they're contacts on a board, actually). If there is any, clean it out by pulling it toward you with the pointed end of a wooden toothpick, VERY carefully. (If you press down on the center bar and break it, you'll need a new connector.)

If the problem is in the USB connector, it's probably dirt. If not, the problem is probably on the motherboard or in the firmware. (Without actually having the hone to check things out, it's all guesswork.)
