yes, it definitely works in europe. I was in france just a couple weeks ago and it worked fine. The only problem is that you cannot get 3g. If you were to use any data, it would be a fair bit slower. However, chances are, you won't get any data with a prepaid card anyway. This is a problem for people who live in europe and want to use a north american phone(or vice versa) but not really travelers. I would use APNDroid to make sure that you don't use any data and get charged a hell of a lot(assuming you don't get data with your prepaid card).
