huawei USB data transfer problems

I have a Huawei P10 pro, but can't transfer data via USB to my computer.
on connections bit of settings it says USB "not connected" so I can't go into the menu.
The USB is connected as it is charging from the computer.
I've enable USB debugging and turned on developer options.

When your phone is plugged in, do you see a usb icon in your notification bar? If so, pull it down, tap on it and select MTP mode.

If you don't see the icon, but your phone is charging, then try cleaning your usb port and use a different cable.
