Help Huawei Watch 2 (Sport) -- SMS notifications

I bought my Dad a Huawei Watch 2 to go with his Samsung phone. He's not getting SMS notifications. I only then learned that there is no SMS icon/app either.

First question: how do you turn on the SMS notifications on an Androidwear/Huawei watch?

Second question: how do you initiate an SMS message?

I tried calling Huawei customer service, but I think its rep wasn't properly trained to understand my questions.

I think he would have to download android messages app on the phone and watch and that should allow him to receive and create sms messages.
