Yes that sounds about right. Often in Chinese there are no word equivalents for some common words we use in English, so the nearest word is used instead.

Sometimes Chinese will use a short phrase where there is a single English noun, for example:
Lighter = 打火机 which literally reads as 'make fire machine'.*
Jeans = 牛仔裤 which reads as 'cowboy trousers'.
Computer(电脑) this reads as 'electric brain'.
Lift/elevator = 电梯 reads as 'electric ladder'.
Condom = 避孕套 reads as 'prevent pregnant sheath'.
Robot = 机器人 = reads as 'machine control person'.

One reason why learning Chinese can be so hard, and why 'Chinglish' can be so bad sometimes.

* this is occasionally bit of a joke amongst the English speaking expats in China. 'Can you pass me the make fire machine please'.
 
^--This is why I shall never learn Cantonese and/or Mandarin. Which begs the question...what is the 'Chinese' Google is using? I'm surprise that Google would make such a mistake...considering 'Chinese' isn't a language.

I don't think Google is using anything officially. Google doesn't really have anything do with Android in mainland China. TBH I've seen couple of different names(different Chinese characters) used for it, depending on which manufacturer is making the phones or tablets. The only thing which seems to be consistent is the English word 'Android' and the green robot/android logo.

Mandarin(Beijing dialect) is the official language of China, everyone learns it at school and should be able to speak it.

Cantonese is the regional language/dialect of Guangzhou(Canton, hence Cantonese), Guangdong province, Hong Kong and Macau. 'Canton dialect' or 'Guangdong dialect' as they sometimes call Cantonese, is not used or taught outside of these areas. In these areas people will say 'Mandarin' when talking about the official language of China

Where I am the official languages are Mongolian and Chinese(Mandarin). But we never say 'Mandarin', we just say 'Chinese' when conversing in English. Cantonese is referred to here as 'Guangdong dialect'. Its similar for some other provinces and regions that I've been in.
