New to Android Phones

Hello,
I'm using a desktop with Ubuntu 12-04 lts and an Android phone build version 4.0.4.
I put an SD card in the phone and installed Gmpt and its associated library into the desktop's operating system. The phone mounted the card and the debugger is unchecked. It shows up under the storage heading properly.
Ripping a CD to a file with VLC was no problem.
I opened the Gmpt file and it recognized the device, asked me to select the SD function, and correctly noted the capacity of the card.
I copied the music file from the operating system to the Gmpt page but the file does not show in the phone. Gmpt keeps running me around in a circle telling me the file already exists and asking if I want to overwrite it?
Help!!
Thank you.
