I'm pretty sure the stock, AOSP Camera app prompts you to change the orientation of your phone when you start recording a video.
An electric shock would probably work better though.

I actually don't mind vertical video as long as it fills up the whole screen. Those little vertical videos, with a lot of black around them get on my nerves though.
It's fine if it's just stuff you're going to keep on your phone for your own personal use. It's when people post these vertical videos on the internet or on TV that it's annoying watching a little sliver of video on a wide screen.The golden mean is in both portrait and landscape. If you follow the rules, you'll get a decent picture.
I prefer portrait since most of my apps need to be read rather than watched and I don't need two hands to hold the phone.
The ones that need landscape will go to landscape from portrait and that will make you turn the phone.
As for video, try filming a ferret running around in piles of Xmas wrappings. It's easier to follow him with the camera than just stay on landscape and hope people find the little bugger.
