Help I have restrict background data checked and text are weird.

Since I have that checked and it works great, except now when I get a group text or multimedia message it is received as a download. I am okay with that and having to download it every time but it wont beep. It will beep if I get a normal text but not for the others. If i unrestrict background data it will beep. Basically im asking how to make it beep for those while restricted or how restrict everything but messages.
