I just lost everything

Yesterday I heard my phone (htc hero) make a strange notification sound. So I pulled it out of my pocket and it was on the home screen. My pattern was gone, and it had the home screen that came with it when it was new. I quickly discovered it had reset itself. All 1,300 contacts were gone. All of my pictures and videos had been erased.

I have been having trouble with my usb port so I cannot use HTC sync. I reconfigured my 4 emails and eventually got some of my contacts back (430). On my SD card all of my downloaded programs folders are still there. So why did it erase my videos (45) and pictures (175) except for 3 random pictures, one I took a day ago and two I took 2 weeks ago.

I always thought if anything happened to my phone that I could always salvage the pictures and videos from the sdcard. But the phone AND sdcard? I downloaded a virus scanner and it says everything is clean.

Has this ever happened to anyone else?
 
That is a good suggestion. I will try that when I get home, 1-2 weeks. I did a wildcard jpg search and for the letters ing, because it names all of the pictures I take imgxxxxxx, and Astro only found the 3 images. (plus others I didn't take)
