Help I miss my Nexus (Old phone)

VincentAnoid

Android Enthusiast
I've recently come from a Galaxy Nexus and I miss it quite a bit. Still not transferred the SIM card across because I'm still adjusting to the LG G2.

I love the G2's battery life, speed, qslide, 5.2inch screen and knock code. However it has two big deal breakers for me. In it's stock messaging app it can't display the time that a message was sent, only what time it was received by the phone. This is done through long pressing a message and selecting "Details". It's an important part of my texting experience because I'm on a cheap MVNO network, TalkMobile and text messages are often delayed from a day to a week until I receive them. The time a message was sent obviously means I can make a clear judgement on whether to discard the message. Plus the G2's messaging app looks like targets 5 year olds, I mean who needs to have 'text bubbles' that large and where's the minimalist theme/background for it where there's no distracting colours/shapes?

Secondly, I can't turn off the sounds the LG G2 makes when it turns on and off. Sometimes I need to discreetly use my phone and it's a huge drawback. Haven't been able to find an option to in Settings.

TL;DR, I miss the Vanilla Android experience but I like the hardware. I want both but I don't want to root/flash due to buggy software :(

1. Check out a third party messaging app. I've been using Handcent forever, never even bother with any stock messaging app (including Hangouts). Cnet just did a brief ranking of a few:
Four Android messaging apps with a little something extra - CNET

2. Settings - Sounds - Touch Feedback and system you can turn em all off here.

Don't give up on your G2! I was a longtime owner of a GNex and loved it but the G2 is leaps and bounds a much better device in all aspects. :)

1. I'm always sceptical of software not already loaded onto my phone. I get anxious about data mining and other privacy concerns out there that could spy on my SMS conversations. Mightytext looks good but I'm still unsure.

2. There are only four options in "Touch feedback & system" for me. They are, dial pad touch tones, touch sounds, screen lock sound and vibrate on touch. No checkbox for power on sound :/

Possibly... but there's a lot of work to be done :)

Google hangouts will take over your SMS and provides sent and received time in the details. It also has a much more "grownup" interface.

Buggy software? Rooting the G2 is a very simple and safe process via either towlroot or ioroot25, rooting alone may be enough with some Xposed mods and a stock launcher like GEL or Nova.

Flashing a custom ROM is not a tricky or buggy process on the G2 either, but it is important to know if you have an LGE or japanese display panel for some ROMs. TWRP fully supports most variants of the G2 and can be installed simply with AutoRec, and there are a large number of stable ROMs available from very simple AOSP ROMs like SlimKat to fully featured ROMs like AICP and Beanstalk.

I wanted to love hangouts, but couldn't. No native unread counts, no quick msg. ability, and sending a picture(with a msg. and an emoji) can be a tedious process. It doesn't switch over from SMS to MMS very well, unless you can find that little, tiny sms tab to tap.:(

That's just how it seems to me. Custom roms don't appear to me that fine tuned as the stock rom that came with the phone. I don't want to mess it up

Thanks for the info I'll look into it. Well in that case it means I could hangouts as well as my stock messaging app and only switch to Hangouts when I want to view the Sent time of a message.

I'm using the stock messaging app and all of my incoming/outgoing text messages are time stamped. You might want to look into this or your carrier. I'm on Verizon.

You do know you change the bubble format, and more importantly to your complaint...you can pinch/to-zoom to increase/decrease the size of the bubbles.

I came from a GN as well, but the only thing I miss is the stock Android OS. I can't imagine going back though due to the old specs. Go boot up your GN...when I've used mine at times...it is SSSSLLLLLOOOOOWWWWW as hell. :(

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Yes they are timestamped on my stock messaging app, however it only shows the time that the phone has received the message. It does not show the time that the sender sent the message.

Thanks for the pinch to zoom trick, I never knew you could do that hah :)

And my GNEX isn't too slow in comparison, I don't have that many apps installed/running so that might be why.
