Help I need a Bar Code/QR Scanner

Rilauven

Google Goggles no longer exists, Google Lens is incompatible with both my devices for reasons I'm not entirely sure of, though my phone is admittedly showing it's age. (Blackberry Priv running 6.01) Is there anything I can use that won't throw ads in my face?

I got rid of my old barcode scanner - can't remember why, just something threw up some doubts. Currently have Norton Snap installed, and while I don't use it often it seems to work fine (and I don't get ads).

Norton Snap is the one i use... I started using it after a Security Now Steve Gibson podcast about the fact that a QR code is essentially a web link that doesn't tell you where it is going...

I wouldn't click on one of those in an email... so why would i do it because someone has printed it out for me.

Norton snap does let you see where its going.. and they do some filtering to block dodgy URLS before letting you go there.

This is a good point, though if you have a default browser set it will open the page in the background as well (presumably only if it thinks it is safe: I've not gone out of my way to find a dodgy code in order to test that!).

Thing is with QRs, if you go scanning some whatever it is QR with your generic scanning app, yeh... good luck! Like clicking on some arbitrary URLs in an email or something.

But I never do that, on the other hand I'm scanning QRs several times a day with my phone. Like if I'm paying for something in a shop or restaurant, I scan the establishments QR with WeChat or Alipay to pay them. I want to rent a bicycle, I scan the bike's QR with the appropriate bike app. same thing to pay for bus, subway, taxi, etc. etc.

I know what website this QR is going to without even scanning it And I would scan it with the appropriate app.
