Maybe I'm being dim but could someone tell me how I set up the phone so I do not get an audio notification when I receive email.

I use Locale and a plugin called "Local Email Silencer" of which, neither are free. Have worked well for a couple years now.

Ok I'm a slow learner, how do I do this? I've looked in the menu when in gmail and email and there is no option for sound. I also looked in accounts/sync and didn't see it.

Its not just you - took me awhile to find it!

When in Mail bring up 'Settings'. Then click on your selected 'Added account' and it will bring up a raft of further settings. Scroll down to 'Notification settings\Select ringtone'

Job done.

Gmail uses the default notification sound. What other apps/activities use the default? Every now and then I get my email sound and there's no email, but there's nothing in my notification bar either.
