I want your candid feedback :)

I am thinking of buying a new phone. I am on Verizon, and quite frankly the Galaxy S4 seems to be the only reasonable choice of device. I currently have a Galaxy Nexus (since December 2011, it's time...).

I want your feedback as to what you think of the phone (for those who have it). What is the good? What is the bad? What do you love? What do you hate?

I want to make the best decision possible knowing the most about this phone! A part of me wants to just wait and ride it out with my GNex until the holiday season, and possibly get better prices, or device choices, but a part of me is over my GNex and wants a new phone right now haha. Thanks!

Gnex owner here, just throwing my .02 saying the HTC One has gone through the FCC for Verizon so hopefully it'll show up there soon if you're thinking about it.
Also with the Moto X, Ultra and eventually the Note 3, there's a lot of options coming out soon. If you can hold out, I would. I'm "upgrading" to an S3 only to hand off my Gnex to my lady and hold out until our contract is up this winter.

I have owned quite a few phones, HTC, Samsung and Motorola. Very pleased with the s4. Great size, screen, speed, reception.

Coming from a Rezound the S4 rocks. Super amoled screen is beautiful, battery life is amazing (over 3 days with light usage) The S4 is fast and lag free compared to the rezound. I am extremely happy with my S4. Highly recommend it.

Just moved to the S4, coming from a rooted/ROMed Verizon Galaxy Nexus. This phone is pretty dang unbelievable coming from the Nexus. I thought the Nexus was fast, especially with ROMs I'd flash, but it cannot even compare. Sure, the Note 3 and other later year offerings might best the S4, but the S4 definitely can hold its own. You will not regret a Nexus to S4 switch.

HTC: stay away from them. Their updates are either very late or non-existent. I had the DINC and DINC 2 and will never buy HTC again after what they pulled with the DINC 2.

S4: Great phone. There are some bugs but it's WAY better than the last generation of phones

Moto: My buddy works there. Told me to wait but when they didn't announce a new phone I had to get the S4 (my dinc 2 was full of suck). Now moto is coming out with their new phone "soon". If you don't need to get a new phone you might want to wait.

The S4 has amazing hardware. The camera is great as is the screen. It's fast and capable. 64GB micro SD cards are great! Need all that room. Internal memory on the 16GB version is mediocre...only about 8GB usable.

However, just about all the Samsumg software ("Smart" this and that) is pretty useless. Many of the stock apps are also lackluster and most people replace them with other apps. The software in general and many of the UI features can use some tweaking and they could use more options to turn certain stuff off and on. After all, Android is about choices and customization (as opposed to iOS). The auto-brightness feature for the screen sucks...needs work. The volume control and annoying warning need work. Bluetooth seems to have strange issues with connecting to some devices. Signal reception on my phone is worse compared to the S3 and my previous EVO 4G (wife has the S3 and she always has better reception). Had to turn off all of the 'special' Samsung features and make some tweaks to the Dev options in order to get rid of horrid lag.

I'm rooted which has given me some flexibility. Am still running the stock ROM as I haven't had time to install different ROMs yet...but as time goes by, more and more ROMs will become available which will allow this phone to really shine.

I came from an EVO 4G which I really liked and so far, I see the S4 as an incremental upgrade...nothing more. My wife has the S3 and the same thing can be said regarding that phone...the S4 is a minor incremental upgrade compared to the S3.

So overall...love the hardware...and am unimpressed and disappointed with the software. The good news is that crappy software is fixable while crappy hardware is not. And this phone has awesome hardware.

YMMV.

I've had my S4 for about a month now, coming from a Motorola Atrix 4G. I love my S4. The screen size is perfect. I can use it one handed 95% of the time. (Something I was concerned with.) The Super Amoled HD screen is just beautiful and everything is very sharp and colors look almost life like. (There is some over saturation, which can be changed in the settings menu.) Reading books, magazines and watching movies is just awesome and looks great. Text and emails are so clear and sharp. The 13MP camera is just great. Love all the features and modes you can select. It can take great close ups and 4X digital zoom with great detail. Really like that I can be video recording and take still pictures at the same time. (Pictures are pretty good, not as good as if you where just using the camera only.) Its a very fast phone. I have had some lag, but not sure if it was due to the 3rd party launcher I'm using. (Doesn't happen often.) Most of the S features I don't use in everyday life, but find them to be useful for when I need them. The speaker is very loud and sounds great, but lacks bass. Since I have 9 different calendars to keep track off, the Stock calendar app is just awesome and really easy to use. Love the earth tone color and transition affects.

My S4 is lighter and thinner then my smaller Atrix 4G. (I was surprised about how light it is.) The notification bar with all the quick setting buttons, that can be customized, is really nice. I like how the settings are broken down into 4 tabs: connections, my device, accounts and more. I ended up taking my 16GB version back for the 32 GB version because I ran out of space once I transferred everything from my Atrix 4G over. (16GB= 9GB of personal storage; 32GB= 24GB personal storage.) One thing I wish my S4 had that my Atrix 4G has, is the "USB Mass Storage" option when hooking up to a computer. On my S4, when I'm transferring pictures to my computer to my Kodak Easy Share program, it doesn't see my S4. So I have to first transfer the pictures to a picture folder, I created on my desktop, then transfer them to the Kodak program. (It's not heard, just more steps to do the same thing.)

The battery life is great for me. I get on average around 12 to 14 hrs using wifi 90% of the day, bluetooth about 10%; GPS 5%, sync set for every 4 hrs for email, about 1 hrs of web reading and 3 hrs on screen time using auto brightness. (The screen is almost 40% of battery drain.)

I use "WatchON" more then I thought I would. Its a really cool feature. Since our remotes are not back lite, using my S4 to change channels in the dark, schedule recordings or see what's on TV is a handy feature. Using "Flipboard" for my news, all in one place is really nice and you can customize it to what you want to see.

Bluetooth works well and devices connect quickly. Although my 3 yrs old Plantronics bluetooth I have to open up bluetooth settings and select it to connect, even though its paired. (I don't think its a Samsung thing.) I like the dual display mode too. Really helpful, but limited. I have over 245 apps and only about 10 of them are capable of using this feature.

There are other phones due out in the next few months that will go head to head with the S4 in specs, etc. I feel though that the S4 is future proof for at least the next few yrs. Samsung is really good at pushing out updates, which is really good.

I've had some really great Android phones. Having started way back on day one with Google's G-1 via T-Mobile years ago, Android's come a long way.

Currently I have a HTC One, Galaxy S3, Note 2, Nexus 4 & Galaxy S4.

At the risk of sounding like a commercial for Samsung, I simply cannot say enough good things about the S4. Oh sure it's not perfect but my choice is to focus on the many positive aspects of this very well thought out, refined Android phone.

I find the display size ideal for my usage, with it's wide range of brightness and power saving mode, the battery life I'm enjoying is just terrific. With it's high ppi rating it's even much better than my iPhone 5 display.

One of the first apps I installed was SwiftKey, the increase in speed and accuracy of texting, emails and the like is amazing. A long time Swype user and enthusiast, I finally decided to try SwiftKey and I'm so glad I did.

Having used my Galaxy S3 since the day it was released, I can see the many improvements and refinements Samsung has made in the S4. It's far more than many of the reviews give them credit for . Things like the display contrast and color balance, the significant increase in battery life and how smooth and fast it is.

Due to the differences and refinements in this latest version of TouchWiz, I haven't even rooted this S4 yet. I bought it upon release and the newness still hasn't worn off. That's saying a lot coming from this long time Android user .

I could not be happier.

I had an S3 and upgraded to an S4. I also have an HTC One (my second phone, for work).

At weekends when I only take one phone with me...it's usually the HTC One. It's a nicer size, has a better feel and (arguably - well, someone will argue!) more reliably gets a fast mobile data signal where I live/work.

Whilst using the S4 a memory card crashed and lost all my holiday pics - but that could have been the card. The S3 did that to me, too...which could ...could also have been the card!

Many of the S4/Touchwiz "clever bits" are just too clever and end up being a pain and getting turned off. On the other hand, so does HTC/Sense. Both of mine have Nova running instead.

Truth be told - you'll love either of those handsets. They are both great.

I have had my GS4, for a week now. Came from the DNA which was a nightmare for me. 4 replacements total, the 1st had the sim error all the time. Second one had a defective camera, 3rd same as second one the camera had horrible lines through it. And the last one kept giving the preparing sim error, would never get a data connection, and would randomly power on/off on its own. So far the gaaxy 4 is great, i cannot complain about a thing.
