i have the new htc hero and in the upper left corner there are market icons or something, one of them is taken by security thing i just downloaded, what are those thing for???

Hello and welcome to Android Forums! 
The icons in the upper left are notifications. If you pull down the notification bar you can see detail on what they are and if you touch them it will take yu to the app that spawned them. If the icon is persistent, then it is most likely monitoring something. For example, with the weather channel app you can have the current temperature displayed all the time.
What you might find is that the tray gets crowded and there is a poawer drain for them. Most apps let you turn them off.
