Identify and alter codec for DLNA

Hi
I am currently using an old HtC media link to receive content from my Nexus 7 and HTC one x+ using DLNA app Skifta.
All of my media works between all 3 devices with the exception of some of my video files. All of these files are in mp4 format and work in the standard media players of their respective devices however when I try to play them on another device using DLNA they will not work which would lead me to believe there is a problem with the codec for these files.
As many of my mp4 files work perfectly using dnla I was wondering if anybody knows a way I could identify the codec used in the files that do work and alter the ones that don't to use the same codec that the dnla appears to support .

I'm far from an expert on these matters so please accept my apologies if the above makes no sense and if you have a solution please dumb it down as much as possible :-)

I would also like to say the skifta is an excellent app and I would recommend anyone to download it. The issues I describe above are prevalent in all dnla apps I have tried and skifta is by far the best.

Thanks for reading
Al
