Last night I had 60% battery on my brand new S4, the phone was on and alarm set. Though I woke up to see day light!!! and the phone was off!!!.

I turned it on and it only had 1% battery????

It wasn't plugged in? And I had no messages or apps running??

Was thinking off turning it off at night, but worried like the iphone 4s, the alarm will not activate if turned off.

Anyone had this or know if alarms work on this model when turned off?

I always thought the phone would switch itself back on, largely because my old Nokias used to do that and I just kinda assumed droids were better not worse ;)

.. but now you ask, I'm not so sure

Hang on while I do a quick test with my Nexus 4 (so YMMV) ..

Well, I'll be: it doesn't

That's really disappointing :(

Nope. The phone must actually be powered on in order to work.

There are a few options available to you:
1. Leave the phone on and plugged in to your charger overnight
2. Turn off unnecessary services overnight so your battery does not drain. Turn off WiFi, GPS, Bluetooth. Possibly consider going into Airplane Mode as well, unless you don't want to miss any calls that might come in.

I'm curious as to what applications you have installed and running in the background. I have a GS4 and I do not experience a dramatic rundown of the battery overnight unless I have a lot of apps running.

Last night, in fact, I woke up at 0200, unplugged the phone, forgot to plug it back in, and had 97% battery at 0700.

But I've had days where I went from 100% at 0700 to 30% by 1200 b/c of apps running in the background.
