So i was told to leave settings>location>GPS>satellites off for battery life, as well as location>location setting>off. But im kind of confused now because when i open my navigation up it seems to work just fine with both of those turned off...so i dont need to enable these to have my nav app working? (standard nav app that ships with phone).

I would enable them both while using any navigation features. The phone and your navigation apps can work with a GPS satellite network, or they can get their position information from the cell phone network. But a little redundancy - using both - may help in situations where either GPS satellites aren't visible to the phone or where your cell phone signal is weak or missing.

And yes, turning off GPS functions may save some battery power. Not so much for the cellular network-based location services.

I just added the GPS widget to my home screen, that makes it much easier to turn off/on.
