Root I'm new to rooting, someone please help?

I have a Samsung Mesmerize from US Cellular.
Hardware version is I500.04
Model Number is SCH-I500
Firmware version is 2.3.4
Baseband version is S:i500.04 K.EH09
Kernel version is 2.6.35.7
Build number is SCH-I500.EH09

I have a Windows XP home edition SP3 desktop.
Browser wise I use firefox 7.0.1
I also have internet explorer 8 if needed

I gave you the above information because I'm sure some of it will be useful when I'm rooting my mesmerize.
I have not started rooting it yet or anything.
File manager wise I have an app. called ASTRO File Manager
I don't know if it can do root commands or not though?

Before I root my phone I have a few questions and curiosities though.

1. If I mess up/brick it are there ways to recover it back to the way it is now, or at least most of the way?

2. I don't like the volume limit when playing music, is it possible to make the music play louder, because right now I have it turned all the way up.. but I still want it louder..

3. Can I tether it to my computer somehow without getting charged? Right now I have a 5GB limit, but sometimes I tend to go over...

4. How do I remove the applications that came with the phone? I have applications I don't like such as City ID, and Buddies Now (whatever that is?)

5. Is the operating system for my phone currently up to date?

To bypass the volume limit thing while playing music does the phone always need to be rooted?

Like if I temporarily rooted it then had the volume up louder than what it was designed to be.. and I then unrooted it and rebooted would I still be able to make the volume go higher than the number 15 in the Music Player?
Because right now it only goes to 15..

I really want to root my Mesmerize, mainly because I don't want City ID on it, and I want the volume to go louder, plus it'd be nice to installed applications the need root access...

Will someone please tell me all of the benefits of rooting? What exactly does it do, like what special privileges does it give me? Will it allow me to do the things I want to do?

If I mess up is there a way to copy my entire phone stuff to my computer? Like the settings, applications, etc, etc.?

Where do I go to get full versions of applications that don't contain viruses? Like if I was to keep city id or wanted a full version of another application where would I download it at without getting viruses?

What do you use for virus protection?

Notes: I use 3G Watchdog to keep track of my data usage, Android Assistant to clean thing up along with FMR Memory Cleaner.
Antivirus wise I use Antivirus Free, Lookout Security & Antivirus, NetQin Security & Anti-virus
Startup Cleaner Pro is nice
I have Superuser installed, no idea what it does or anything, think I need it for rooting though?
App Update Notifier is pretty helpful also
ASTRO File Manager
Also how do I remove Media Hub?
SDMove and SDWatch also help me out a lot

I think that's all the questions I have. I know it's a lot but certainly someone will be kind enough to respond and tell me what question number they're answering and actually give a descent answer!

Thanks for you time and help!

Short answer: Rooting is not available (easily) for the Mez with 2.3.4.

z4root is no longer supported (for more than 18 months now), and Super One Click doesn't work with Gingerbread.

The method that is available requires a good working knowledge of the root process, experience with doing it, etc. It will absolutely void your warranty and brick your phone if you make a mistake.
