Under American law, you must ask your carrier to unlock your phone for you. You can't do it by yourself anymore (at least to my knowledge). BUT, don't worry just ask them and they can do it, just provide a valid reason ("I'm going to Europe for a month and would like to use it there. Blah blah blah blah blah.") They should just unlock it for you (they'll give you an unlock code), just keep asking them until they give it to you as long as it's a legitimate reason.
