Help Images on SD card show exclamation

Hi, here's the back story. My device has an encrypted SD card. Due to a problem at work, the device (not the SD card) was wiped back to factory settings. Since then, any new photo I take displays fine in Gallery but there are hundreds of placeholders for the photos that were there before the wipe but they no longer load up. I just get a watermark image with an exclamation mark.

I've connected to my home computer, and again, I can see all the files but when I try to load an image (other than images taken after the remote wipe) I get an error "invalid image".

Can anyone explain what's happening please and how I can get access to my old photos?

Thanks,
Pete

My device has an encrypted SD card.

That means the SD card is effectively permanently locked. You're getting the invalid image errors because encrypting scrambles them, and only the phone knows how to undo it. Most likely resetting it back to factory settings made new encryption keys, so the phone "forgot" how to undo the encryption.

It's safe to say your pictures are pretty much gone for good.
