iMessaging for android

Hey there, I'm new to this whole forum thing and have not the slightest idea about developing apps. But here's an idea:

Do you know how iMessage for apple is an messenger up that uses WiFi or data to send text or pictures to other iphones? Well why isn't there a messaging app for android that allows you to text regularly, and allows you to send/receive pictures from other phones via WiFi.

I'm not talking about an app where you have to register and make a profile, I mean a standard SMS messenger that let's you send/receive MMS over WiFi

Can this be done?

'Messages' is the software on the device. iMessage is an instant messaging 'service' developed by Apple. You still have to log in to your Apple ID and have this account on your Apple device to use it. 'Messages' (the software) can also use other instant messaging services such as Google talk or Jabber. You just add that account in the settings of 'Messages' software on your Mac for example.

So are you asking for someone to create a messaging App that can use iMessage service from an Android device? Not sure if this is possible, but there are Apps that already use Google Talk and Jabber services that offer features such as video calls, share screen, send picture etc etc.

Integrating Google talk capabilities into the stock SMS interface might work but still relies on everyone logging into google talk (this might be automatic since most people log into a google account on Android). This replacement App would need to be intelligent enough to realise the recipient has a Google Talk account. Thus, their phone number (which you enter or have as a contact) has to be linked in some way to to their google Account which is exactly what happens with apples service

Also, on your android device, go to your messages. click the menu and go into settings. There is a menu option called 'Default messaging app'. In there you can set Messages (the thing you use for sending SMS) as the default app for Messeging.

In the same settings under 'Chat settings', you can set the default message type as 'Chat message'.

So, it seems this is already possible, but because its not the default set-up probably not a lot of people use it like this.
