Immersion down to 1m (IPx7)

I am still in the air on which phone to get and I have always loved the quality and durability of Moto phones so when I saw this site that claims that the Motorola Droid RAZR is "Totally protected against dust (IP6x) and protected against immersion down to 1m (IPx7)" I almost jumped to VZW's site and hit the pre-order button immediately... I ride a motorcycle as my primary method of transportation and this is a major bonus.

A cooler head prevailed and I decided to look around some more. The problem is... I can't find that info on any other site. Can anyone point me to another location that states that the RAZR is Protected against water immersion for 30 minutes at a depth of 1 meter?

I don't know if it is protected that deep, I would guess it is more for spills and such.. but your statement does lead me to ask another question... why would 1 meter be a major bonus for riding your motorcycle... you ride under water?
I think you might have bigger issues that if your phone will work....
:)

Thank you for asking that! I was just getting ready to.

I live in Florida and may as well be under water quite often when riding. Plus, when riding across the country, you never know how long you will be stuck in a torrential down pour. Even some of the best rain gear can allow you to get wet after hours of 70MPH in the rain. Also, if it is, indeed, IPx7 certified I can use the GPS while riding.

IPx7 = Ingress of water in harmful quantity shall not be possible when the enclosure is immersed in water under defined conditions of pressure and time (up to 1 m of submersion).

I would highly doubt the claim of 1m for 30 minutes. Even Moto claims it's a Splash Protection Only coating for the device. Unless this site provides a video of it doing such things i would take that info with a grain of salt.

That being said if your curious about better build quality imo hands down it goes to the RAZR. The Nexus is all plastic with a curved glass screen. Samsung is no slouch but they are also known for weak radio's in their devices.

Meanwhile the RAZR is Stainless Steel Core, Splash Protection, Kevlar, Gorilla Glass and Moto has always been known for having the superior radio. The only thing the Nexus has over it at launch is a removable battery, larger screen, perhaps better camera programing and it comes with ICS. Moto has stated the RAZR will also have ICS but it will be a month or two after the Nexus.

So if your willing to wait a month or two i think choosing the RAZR is the better bet. Sure the Nexus may run a little faster at launch due to the ICS built in hardware acceleration vs Gingerbread but if the RAZR will be getting that as well what's the point?

These are just my opinions and not meant to be taken as device "X" is better than device "Y". But overall to me when it comes to build quality choosing the RAZR over the Nexus is a no brainer (again in case of flames just my opinion on the matter).

I'm guessing that site just has a number of pre-canned pros/cons to choose from and that was the closest thing they had to denote the SplashGuard that Moto uses. The phone is internally and externally coated, including ports, but is only said to be water resistant.

I don't think Motorola would tout the handset as being water resistant at such depths even if it was. I think they err on the side of caution when it comes to things like this.

I'm sure once it's released we will find out. You know some crazy dude is going to do that :)

I bet the phone will still work fine too.

Put it this way. I'm not surprised at the claim in that article and certainly won't be surprised to see it's actually true.

my only concern is the battery (high temp) is going 2 kill it way 2 fast, imo

If moto sends out this phone with a major issue like that then they deserve to sink. I would be very surprised to see them push out their pet project with major problems. Cant see it happening.

I personally dont anticipate any major issues with this handset. verizon and Moto are very excited about this release. They both cooled off on the Bionic well before it released. It was obviously a stop gap and they knew it.

I predict the RAZR will be a very solid and well performing device. Cant ask for anything more than that.

So i've seen some testing for this "splash" nanocoating. In testing for heavy downpour with the phone fully exposed, typical failure is at around 10 minutes or so. With the coating on, the phones have averaged over 30 mins w/o failure.

Of course, the coating doesn't mean the water damage indicator won't be affected. If you choose to run your phone through the heavy rain to test out, it'll probably still work, but you might have voided your warranty if your indicator gets wet (so don't be foolish).

No MFG will advertise this time either because of what I just stated above. It's not in your best interest to field test this just for the hell of it (go nuts once your warranty is over).

Thats pretty awesome. Like I said above....not surprised at all. This phone goes above and beyond to differentiate itself from the pack.

Moto hit it out of the park if this handset lives up to its hype.

Yoda, your thoughts on this RAZR? Stellar piece of hardware? Run of the mill nice handset? Moto knocked it out of the park? Save your pennies for something else?

ummm...when was the last time a smartphone was released without major issues? if you think this phone wont have any, you're setting yourself up for disappointment

On the other hand dooming the phone to being problematic in advance of it's release sets up unrealistic expectations of the phones usability and performance. Yes there will be issues! This phone will have issues... the GNex will have issues... and every other phone (including the iPhone) will have issues. The question needs to be not what they did wrong... but what they did right. ;)

And also how quickly they can fix what they screw up

Seems a silly claim, unless the external microsd & sim ports are protected at the base of the ports and the connector/line runs to the SoC.

Surely people will not be goofy enough to test this out...... Yeah right.
