Hi and welcome to Android Forums. 
Most modern phones don't require an initial charge to calibrate the battery. Generally, you can use them straight out of the box without any degradation in battery life whatsoever. The rule of thumb though is to not let them discharge completely if you can avoid it. It won't matter if you do it every now and again but certainly don't do it routinely.
