I am new to the moto g and I needed to reset it so I did it via recovery mode and while I was there I seen an option to install an update from sdcard I was wondering if you were able to flash SuperSU with that but I wasn't sure if it would work or not, would you be able to flash SuperSU via that?

Yes, this. The stock recovery has the ability to flash official, signed updates. That's how OTA updates work. But to flash a superuser mod you'll need a custom recovery, which means bootloader unlocks or whatever the recommended method is for that handset to install it.
