Installing a new launcher?

Lately, I have been experiencing an inordinate number of HTC Sense restarts on my stock Droid Incredible. I was hopeful a factory reset after the recent Gingerbread update might fix it, but it has reappeared again, and severely interferes with my user experience. After some research on the topic, I am of the mind that it's an HTC Sense issue that I can't fix.

So, I'm considering installing a new launcher. My very basic question is, how does one go about this? And do folks have any recommendations?

Thanks for all your help!

Go Launcher and ADW are the two big launchers.

After you install the launcher you press the Home button. A box will come up saying which app you want to use for this action. You will see Sense and you new launcher. Check the "Always use this" box and select the launcher you installed. Now you will be using the new launcher.

Go Launcher as another app that will import your desktop setting into itself so you don't have to re-setup you icons.

Thanks for the quick response! Love these forums.

If I wanted to go back to sense at some point, how would I go about doing that?

You go into Applications > Manage apps and select the launcher you installed. At the bottom you will see clear data and select it. The next time you press the home button the "select action" dialog box will appear again. Select Sense to go back.

FYI, ADW EX is $.10 in the market right now. If you have a reasonably fast phone, it's the way to go with tons of customization. The improved tool bar and folders are worth a dime. Go is great, but can be a bit buggier and laggy compared with the others. Launcher Pro is another one to consider. It's easily the quickest and smoothest of the bunch. If your phone is older than a year or so or wasn't the fastest on the block, this is the way to go. The paid version adds additional widget support. As to install, go to the market and install your choice. When you hit the home button, you will have a choice of launchers. Play until your comfortable, then when selecting launches check the default box and that launcher will be there every time you select home. If you do change your mind later, go into applications, select the default launcher your using and click remove defaults. There's very little risk here, your current mfg installed launcher will still be there if you should need it.

You would select default. Also, there is an app on the market called Home Switcher. It's a little easier than going through the settings to switch launchers.

I don't have the link right now but somewhere on this forum is a great list of launchers. Check that out.

If you'd like to try a very light and simple launcher that gives the look and some features of Ice Cream Sandwich try ICS Launcher.

used launcherpro since i got my phone, then discovered GoLauncher. has some great themes and is very customizable.

In case anyone is interested, I settled on LauncherPro. I tried out ADW Launcher, but experienced some serious lag swiping between different screens. LauncherPro is smooth as silk, and I've been able to customize it just to my liking.

Thanks for the help and suggestions, everyone!

I had a bit of lag as well with ADW but I cleared it up by turning down the bounce and slowing down the swipe speed. It is completely gone and it also looks much cleaner. I really like this launcher
