Installing Android as Main OS

So I am interested as installing this as a main os on my second computer which is just collecting dust in the closet, I followed guides saying to make a bootable USB drive, but when i do, it just says "Boot failed" on my second computer when booting from USB, and it doesnt have a .exe boot file on the usb device either. Plus If i do manage to, can i use the App store for apps? Or must I manually install them with apk's?
 
I can't help with your boot issue (could be all sorts of things) but I have installed Android natively in a virtual machine on a PC. The Play Store works as expected :-)

Be aware though that many apps will be incompatible if they expect an ARM processor or some other specific hardware, but most of the apps I tried worked fine apart from a few display issues - I guess some developers didn't expect their app to run on such a large screen.
 
With android x86 project the best I've been able to get is a live disk to work. I don't think my mouse worked either. When I tried to install it would never go all the way. Android x86 isn't very mature yet no matter how much they want to play it off as it is lol
 
I still am reminded of an Android 2.1 boot disc to use the system on a laptop or desktop. it wasn't pretty. Android Market immediately crashed, many apps refused to sideload, and it froze quite often. sometimes the wifi would just stop working or not work to begin with. I am sure that has not changed today either.

This also happened with my working live disk once in a while.. After I was able to guess well enough for the mouse clicks that is lol
