Root Installing ROM's

I'm new to customizing Android. I have rooted my Epic 4G touch, now to install custom rom's. If I install a custom rom do I lose the factory rom that I have on my phone? Go easy on me, I'm sure this is an easy question but I can't seem to find anything about it and don't want to lose everything that I have installed and set up. Thanks

The new ROM will completely overwrite youy factory ROM. That is why before you install the new ROM you need to boot into recovery and do a Nandroid backup befor installing the custom ROM. You can also backup your stock ROM using the ROM manager app. Doing this will give you a backup of your stock ROM if you ever want to reload it.

Installing a custom ROM will require you doing a factory reset, so it's important to do application and data backups (e.g. Titanium) as well as nandroid before doing this (you need both, as they serve different purposes).

Have a read of the sticky posts in Epic 4G - All Things Root - Android Forums - these include guides and how-to's for customising your rooted phone. The members of that forum are also the best people to advise on your phone, since many of the tips and tricks are different for different handsets.

So I got fb21 installed and all my apps, setting, etc. are there. Is it supposed to be this easy? I thought I would have to re-install everything.

Welcome to the forums!

Some updates go easier than others. :)

Rooting varies by individual make and model, so I've moved your thread over here to the Epic 4G Touch rooting area. ;)

Oh - and welcome to root! W00t! :)

There is an option in the settings (at least on recent versions of android) that let's google back up your apps and data to their servers. On my phone it's under "Privacy" and called "Back up my data". If you have that selected it may well explain it.

I don't use it myself - it's probably a complete waste of time trying to preserve any privacy from Google, but I try :D

I'm sure you have Clockwork Mod installed with your Root...Backup the Old Rom...Titanium will keep all your old Data and Apps backed up...Do a Complete Wipe before you flash...Wipe Cache, Dalvik, and Factory Reset Data...

When the New Rom is Flashed Nandroid that and you good to go, even if you F up you can still get back to the old Rom thru Clockwork...
