Internal storage running out bug

Amy_287

Lurker
I keep receiving a message that storage space is running low. I've cleared, unistalled and removed chached data and photos. it disappears and then after a day it appears again and I keep having to repeat the process. what is eating up all my data? how do I fix it?

Best to install a file browser such as Astro or Solid explorer so you can see exactly what is going on.

Things like clearing a cache won't help much as when the app is launched again or ran in the background it will simply fill up again.

That Lenovo tablet was pretty low end from the start. If you have the 8 GB model, you probably have maybe 5.5 GB for usable user storage (apps and files) which can fill up quickly. If you have a lot of media, you could put them on an SD card, but it's only a temporary measure as user space tends to bloat over time. Can you uninstall any apps you're not using?

Social media apps are the worst in terms of bloat, but you could always get rid of Facebook, instagram, etc. apps and access them through the browser.

I agree, if your model is an 8GB one, that out of storage message isn't a 'bug' but rather just math -- 8GB of storage just isn't a practical amount for an Android device as a day-to-day tablet. But if you do have the 16GB model then there are steps you can take that might help.
So is it an 8GB or 16GB model? Do you put a microSD card in it? Looking up this model on Lenovo's site it supports up a 32GB card.

And how much storage do you have left when the message appears. Android needs some free storage as working space, so this message (and the accompanying veto on installing apps) is there to prevent you filling the storage completely and causing real problems. Of course you can argue about whether the manufacturer has set the threshold in the right place (this is something they choose, not Google), but it is there for a reason.

The reason it fills up quickly if you clear a bit of space is probably caches. Many apps like to cache some temporary data, and browsers and social networking apps in particular cache a lot. So you can free significant space by clearing app caches, but by definition it is temporary because they fill up again.

In fact storage use does have a stable level if you don't download new stuff, caches don't grow indefinitely. But if your baseline usage puts you too close to the limit there's really no solution other than to move a significant amount of stuff elsewhere or clear a lot of apps. Or buy a device with enough storage (which is the expensive solution).
