Root [International] Best stock-like ROM?

Casperf1

Newbie
Hey, I was just wondering what you think is the best stock-like ROM. What I mean is, it is more or less exactly the same but enhanced with bloatware removed, faster speed, better battery life etc... perhaps a bit more customization thrown in too (been using cyanogenmod, really liked how I could change a lot in the status bar, the battery icon does my head in) and yeah, that's basically it. Thanks people!

this is a scary question for me :D .....after many desire rom flashes ;) im trying to avoid this route myself ......but dont know for how long :D

....btw stuff like the swipe contact left/right to message/call - is that part of JB or touchwiz ?

ta

Indeed but its true. Even the mighty Cyanogen falls short. Samsung have done a great job.

I'm on CheckROM, I'm a first time flasher (to android anyway ;)) and I like the way the kitchen pro app allows me to add extras to the ROM like themes or even some of the removed bloatware.

I would definitely recommend it.

We can't really recommend it yet. It's only for the GT-i9300 (international S3) but we do not yet know which version the OP has.

I flashed Wanam deodexed rom for my s3 just yesterday, I then themed it with JB Domination to make it look like vanilla android, it's great :)

For the International version, my favourite is Wanamlite (linked in my signature). I'm assuming by stock-like you mean the Samsung Touchwiz ROM that comes with the S3 as stock, rather than a Vanilla Android ROM like the nexus has.

Other popular Stock ROMs are:

Checkrom
Omega

For Vanilla, Cyanogen or AOKP

+1 for checkrom. I liked omega as well but directory bind wouldn't work with that so it's a no go for me.

I'll move this over to all things root.

I reckon I'm gonna go with checkrom. Had a look at it and it seems nice enough with it's customizability and sleekness. Thanks for helping people. One more question though, do I have to delete everything like I did with Cyanogenmod? Because when I tried to restore my contacts on Cyanogen, I kept on getting errors and couldn't open my contacts/phone.

If you are still on cyanogenmod you'll have to do a full wipe, however if you are flashing it over stock you should get way with not having to. So it could be worth flashing stock firmware with Odin before flashing checkrom

The data in Cyanogen will always be incompatible with Stock so you will need to do a full wipe.

I would recommend the following:

1) sms backup+ set it to back up all your SMS to a gmail label
2) Contacts become google contacts (again, in gmail)
3) Titanium backup pro - backup all user apps and data
4) Boot into recovery and take a backup
5) still in recovery, wipe data / factory reset (do NOT do this in android*)
6) Flash the ROM
7) Boot ROM, sign in and install Titanium from the market
8) In Titanium, restore missing apps with data. UNSELECT anything that is a system app, by that I mean do not allow it to restore anything that you did not download from Play)

This should get you the cleanest flash with as much data as possible with no bugs and errors.

Its important to note that the /data partition contains your apps and their data but also, every system setting (wallpaper / ringtones etc). Its these system settings (or system data) that is incompatible with different ROM types (Samsung Vs AOSP) so its crucial not to restore this....

* If you wipe data / factory reset from android, it wipes your entire internal sd card.

Which version of checkrom should I download, checkrom revoHD 7.0 or checkrom evoHD? Also (sorry for all the questions haha) what is a kernel I've had a look around and seen that nova c11 is a good kernel for battery life. Would it be compatible with checkrom? Again sorry for all the dumbass questions ;)

Can't answer the checkrom questions.

A Kernel is "the beating heart" of android. Its what makes it work. Each ROM has a kernel included. You can then try others

I'm on v7 and no complaints here. The kitchen for that version is a little bare though so you'll have to search xda for the mods until it gets updated.

I've never heard of that kernel. Do you have a link?
