Root [International] cyanogenmod and/or root using Mac

Hi guys. I've got a i9300 on the three network in the uk and so far hadn't bothered to root as I have a Mac and it doesn't seem straight forward or even possible? Found a good guide but it's old and don't think it works on 4.1.2.

Anyway was looking at cyanogenmod instructions on how to install and they seem to imply it can be done directly using a Mac without rooting first. Is that correct, does it work? Unless I haven't understood properly what they say. Most guides I've seen online imply root first so I was surprised by cyanogenmod instructions

If it works i think I'll give it a go. otherwise I think I should root first. Anyone know a way using Mac? My other half has a laptop but its very old and slightly wary of using it. Otherwise I haven't really got access to windows as all the work computers are too locked down for security.

Once rooted are the apps such as ROM manager a good way to go or better to do it manually by copying zips from computer and using recovery mode? I think I can use file transfer on my Mac OK to do this, it's just the root in the first place that's tricky which is why cyanogenmod approach is appealing.

Thanks!

In order to install any ROM, you'll need to first isntall a custom recovery. The process is essentially the same (up to the last step) whether you want to wipe and install a rooted ROM or root the stock ROM

Aren't there apps you can use to automatically root? I don't know how reliable they are though. I have a Mac and I downloaded windows 7 using boot loader. Then I rooted it.
