International Data Help

I have the unlimited Data plan grandfathered here in the US and will be travelling to Europe for two weeks. AT&T international data plan requires a one year agreement and i don't need that. I did sign up for the world traveller ($9.95) for discounted calls and world text (50 texts for ~$6.00).

The rep at the AT&T store said that if I didn't have an international data plan, the 3G data wouldn't connect abroad until I told him I had an unlocked Nexus One. Then he scratched his head and wasn't sure. I'd like to have data access while abroad, but I figure I could just use WiFi in the hotel. What I don't want is the phone connecting abroad and I find a $900.00 phone bill waiting for me when I get home.

Anybody got any thoughts?

My girl took her e71x back home to Spain last year. Data worked in Paris airport and in Spain. I had only checked off the the free "international access" features in the account, and allowed data roaming. She only used it to check email, and I'm not sure how much extra I was charged, but I did not sign up for any monthly "international data" plan. Even with that, data is still very expensive.

I'd look into getting a pre-paid minutes/data SIM card if I was going over. It should be much cheaper.

There is no 1 year agreement for the international data plans. You need to call international customer care which is a pain, but you can have them add it when you need it and take it off when you need it.

but like the above said

prepaid is ALWAYS cheaper. when you land in europe, every airport has a cell phone store for tourists (and business people of course) with prepaid sims ready to go
