Root [International] Rooting for the first time

Hey all,

I'm very new to android, and I am considering rooting my Galaxy s3 (on o2 in the uk running 4.0.4) basically to get a custom rom that is as clost to stock ics as I can get.

I think I have found a rom (CM9) from here

I just want some info on how i would return my phone back to factory settings with no trace of the root incase i need to claim on the warrenty.

and also the easiest/best method to root this device, then add the cm9 rom

any help will be much appreciated.

Thanks for that. Looks like a straight forward guide.

I cant seem to find the stock software for my phone on the website the guide provides (i9300bwle7)

and also, after rooting, is there a guide to installing a custom rom (such as cm9) and am I right in thinking that i dont lose any contacts, apps etc by doing this

You should be able to get your stock firmware from here
SamMobile Firmware Page

You will have to wipe your phone going from stock to cm9 so anything that isn't backed up well be lost.

The first thing to do after rooting is boot your phone into recovery mode (volume up, power and home button) and go to the backup and restore and make a backup of your phone (known as a nandroid). This will be your get out of jail free card should anything go wrong.

The next thing is to download titanium backup or a similar backup up and backup all your apps. You can then redownload after wiping and flashing your Rom and restore all your apps.

Then make sure your contacts are saved to Google servers and not just on your phone

Instructions on flashing cm9 can be found here
[ROM][GT-I9300][4.0.4] CyanogenMod 9 nightly builds - xda-developers

Awesome. Thanks again.

So what is the difference between the "nandroid" backup and the titanium backup?

is the nandroid backup like a recovery point? so if anything goes wrong I can go back to that point where my phone was working fine?

ok, finally getting the confidence to do this haha...

on the samfirmware page, its asking for 3 numbers

pda, csc & modem

when i dial *#1234# i get shown

ap, cp & csc.

any idea which is which?

I followed the guide and it all seemed to work ok, but when i start my phone in recovery mode it doesnt start Clock work recovery.

Did i miss something?

How do you boot in to recovery and what happens instead. Don't need sd for recovery to boot

This should help. From Chainfire himself

- NOTE: Sometimes the device does *not* boot into recovery mode and root your device. Just do the entire procedure again if this happens. If it still will not install root and such, make sure that in Odin "Auto Reboot" is not checked. Then after flashing, pull the battery, and boot with VolUp+Home+Power button to boot into recovery manually. This will start the install process.

I think that the root has worked, it just doesnt seem to have installed the ClockWork Mod thing.

when doing the root a message appears on the phone saying something about not being able to find sdcard, it retries a few times and then continues without installing cwm.

dont think the pulling battery thing will work for this will it?

I hold volume down, home and power, it boots into the normal "download mode" where it displays info like "custom binary download: yes 2 counts" etc

whereas I assume its supposed to boot into the clockwork mod recovery mode

That's download mode. Recovery is similar except its volume UP

oh yes, so there is. haha sorry. I'm being a bit dense. running now

Is it safe backing up to the internal sd card? no chance of losing the backup?

BOOM! Done it!! Thanks for all of the help and advice.

Just one more question...

when i was installing CM9, the guide said to restore to factory settings via CWM. I'm guessin that this has got rid of the back up i made on the internal sd?
