Root [International] Rooting Question

Hey Fellow Android Addicts,

I do a lot of lurking on these forums so i know this is the best place to get some advice :p

Basically a few quick questions about rooting my S3. Bare with me please as i know nothing about it at present, just want to find out if it's worth me trying ;)

I have come across some cool apps lately but they need root access to run them. What i want to know is :-

- Can i root my S3 but keep the phone as it is? with ICS etc. I am happy with what i have got but want these apps on my phone.
- Or do i have to install a custom rom after it is rooted?
- Rumours are Jelly Bean will be coming to S3 this month or next, will that have an influence on a rooted phone?

Basically i want to keep my phone as it is but get the super user rights to run these apps :p I am on Vodafone UK.

Hope i explained myself correctly ;)

Any help much appreciated thx :D

Welcome to the forum VirslGold and thanks for joining.

Yeah you can keep your stock firmware after rooting. If you use this guide to root your firmware stays the same, you just get superuser and cwm.

The cfroot kernel which gets installed should allow for ota updates however this does seem a bit hit and miss. So when JB is released you may have to flash manually with Odin. It's the same procedure as rooting so it shouldn't cause any problems.

Hey Shotgun84,

Thank you very much for your reply bro ;)

Is is hard to root a phone? I heard it's easy to mess your phone up and a nightmare to restore :(

Thx again for your reply :D

Samsung are pretty easy to root. You just have to put one file in Odin attach your phone while in download mode and press start. There will always be a risk but if you follow the guide to the letter you shouldn't have any problems. The majority of problems on Samsung phones will occur from flashing something which isn't intended for the model.

Hello Again,

I went through the video and watched carefully, then i read through the blog carefully. I want to be 100% certain before i try.

Basically i downloaded odin and extracted, which worked. Then i extracted the CF-Root-SGS3-v6.0.zip and i get another zip file (26mb), then i extract that and i get 2 disc images and a VLC Media File (.bin) when in the blog it says i should get a .tar file from the zip file.

Any ideas why i am getting these files instead of the .tar file?

Thx :D

Hello Again Shotgun84,

Sorry to be a real pest bro and keep asking questions, but maybe i am missing something :(

When i extract the CF-Root-SGS3-v6.0.zip (8.46mb) once it gives me another zip file (26.6mb) not the .tar file. That's why i extracted twice and ended up with the VLC / disc images. When i extract once i just get another zip file and no .tar file. Like below screenshot :-

I browsed for the .tar file through Odin with 1 extraction and nothing is in the folder.

Like i say, sorry to be a pest about this :(

Thx for all your help man :D

How do i give you kudos for helping? I see people giving you thanks etc but can't see where to do it :p

Edit :- Just seen the thanks button ;)

Thx again bro ;)

It did show up in Odin this time :D but i haven't got time to do it today, maybe tonight if i am lucky.

I read that its best to do a restore point and back up your apps with titanium if you are flashing roms. Seeing as i wont be flashing roms just getting super user access should i still back up or not?

Also i read that it backs up to the internal sd card, if i buy a micro sd card for my S3 would i be able to back it all up to that? or only to the internal one?

This will be my last questions m8 ;) i promise :p

Don't worry about asking questions, we all have to learn somewhere.

Yeah, you can backup your restore point (nandroid backup) and titanium to an external sd. To be honest is the best place for them as ifyou did need to get a replacement phone for any reason you could just transfer the external sd and restore.

I'd still do the backups even though you aren't too interested in flashing a Rom. When jellybean is released there could be some conflicting data between ics and jb so you may have to wipe your phone to get the best possible install.

I worked out why i wasn't getting the .tar file when i was extracting.....I was getting it :( but like an idiot never checked the file ext. and just took it as granted it was another zip file

Anyways i will get back to you when i have tried this all :D

I vote for a knighthood for SirShotgun84 :D thank you very much for all your help and your patience in this matter :p

Best forum and help by a mile on the net ;)

EDIT :- Would it not be better to unroot my phone when JB is released, update to JB then root the phone again to save any complications?

:D
Thanks, I think the Queen might protest about that one though.

When installing jb your phone will get unrooted at the same time so you will need to reroot after. It's not so much the rooting that could cause complications when switching to jb. From my experience with the gs2 when it received the update from gingerbread to ics there were quite a few problems. The majority of these could be sorted by wiping your phone to remove any system files that were still lurking from the gingerbread firmware and causing conflicts.

Although, we don't know if current rooting methods will be entirely compatible.... I would just wait for a custom version.

Hello Again,

been really busy last few days so never got a chance to try this out till this morning and it worked fine :D ( well as far as i can tell :p )

Thx again for all your help bro ;) i really do appreciate it.

Few quick questions :-

- Is it ok to back up to internal sd card, then wipe it and back up to ext sd card when i recieve it in a day or two? and is it ok to back up system files as i wont be using a custom rom?
- Can anyone give me a heads up on any must need apps that you think i would be interested in after root.
- Also when i open up Titanium i get this message, shown in screenshot. It's kinda got me slightly worried i may have screwed up  I added all drivers for USB debugging and i have the box checked but i still get this message....

- Also in regards to SUroot post does he mean that at present there is no compatible root for JB so may have to flash a JB rom after the JB update?

Great forum, great mods / admin, very helpful :D The virtual beers are on me ;)

Edit :- wow big ass screenshot, sorry about that :s

Edit2 :- message in screenshot has now disappeared when i use titanium, just panicked a bit hehe ;)

JB isn't out on our device so we have no way of knowing.

What are you backing up to /sdcard?

As long as you wipe via recovery, you will not wipe /sdcard. Only wiping from within android will do that

I ordered an Ext SDcard, so waiting for delivery.

Was wondering if it's ok to back up to internal SD, then when the EXT SD gets delivered wipe the back up from internal SD and back up to EXT SD.

Cheers
