Help International SMS Fails

softgui

Newbie
Hi All,

I'm new here so hi to ya'll.

I just migrated from an iPhone 4 to a Galaxy S3. Love new phone but I have a really annoying problem.

When I send local SMS texts they all work just fine. The problem comes when I try International SMS.

If I pick the recipient from my contacts list, and send the SMS it always comes up as "failed".

If I manually enter the same number into the recipient text area and send the International SMS - it works !

The mobile number in the Contact is set as default and it's exactly the same as the one I manually enter.

The number is in a format like +[country code][local mobile no. minus any leading zeros]

Strange that it works when I manually enter it yet fails when picked from the contacts list.

Btw: I have called Virgin Mobile twice on this issue and they tell me it should work fine :(

Anyone got any ideas on what the solution might be?

thanks :)

Welcome to the forum softgui and thanks for joining.

I don't have any experience sending texts international so I'm not too sure. I'll move this to our main gs3 forum so more people will see it and you should get an answer:)

I suspect you may need to check your contact details. (And I know what your thinking)

Where you see the contacts number, it is prefixed with 'work, home, mobile' etc. Check to see if they are set for mobile.

Thanks for your correction and replies.

I had checked that the number was assigned to the Mobile number category - and it was.

I'll keep trying to figure it . . . .

I'm wondering if it's a carrier specific issue?

Have you tried with an alternative sms app like gosms?

I have managed to fix the problem. Here's what I found and the fix.

When I initially sync'ed the GS3 with my Outlook (via Kies) it created all of my contacts onto my phone. Fine.

What I have noticed is that when the Outlook contact had more than one email address, Kies creates a new contact entry on the GS3 FOR EACH EMAIL address.

It so happened that in Outlook, my brother had a home and work email address - quite a common thing in the same Contact detail entry (Outlook handles multiple emails per Contact)

Kies had created 2 contacts on my phone for my brother. I had noticed this earlier but figured it would take the first of the two.

When I removed the 2nd contact entry for my brother on my phone leaving a unique Contact item for him (the person I was SMS'ing) . . . . the International texting started to work just fine.

It seems that the SMS App was getting the phone number from the 2nd contact that had been created - and it did'nt have any phone details, hence the "failed" message.

Hope this info helps anyone else with this issue.
