Root [International] software update not available - phone modified

I have rooted my S3 and also flash it with the official unbranded UK ROM 4.1.1, as it would not boot properly after I was playing with it

Anyway ... as it seems the 4.1.2 update might be on its way soon, I check for updates OTA .. but it pops up and says, your phone is modified and unable to update OTA .. is this really the case, as I am on official ROM, thought the update should work ... or does it have to be done via KIES?

Even when using the stock rom - when you root your phone or install a new kernel, it will sit at modified.

You will need to reset the flash counter (Triangle Away), flash a stock rom and factory reset ..
I reset the FlashCounter myself and although the download mode claims my phone is unmodified - Android knows it is so a factory reset is essential.

can i update to 4.1.2 from within Kies?

i'm rooted and don't wanna unroot and flash stock firmware just to update

You won't be able to use kies so you may as well just flash the updated stock firmware with Odin when available, instead of flashing back to your original and then upgrading from there. If you use mobile Odin to flash the new firmware you can tick the everroot option which will root the new firmware when it gets flashed.

when will the 4.1.2 firmware for international unlocked UK handsets be available

Unknown ...

Keep an eye on here : Firmware archive | Samsung Updates

Look out for the BTU fimrware (Stock British) - at the moment there is only the XEO available (Polish) - Although you can install it on your British handset via Odin. This is the stock rom so no root / modification needed. Only problem is Kies. When you install a ROM different to your phone's origin, Kies / OTA might not work properly. I had a South African firmware once and it didn't download the new update via OTA.

I reset the flash counter on my s3 and status said normal but just tried checking if the update was available and it now says modified. After reboot its gone back to normal anyone know why this might be?

With 4.1.1 or 4.1.2 Samsung apparently changed SOMETHING to check if the phone is rooted / modified.

I have a similar "issue" - the download mode tells me I got an official kernel / rom and unmodified, but Android itself says its modified.

As far as I know - the only way to 100% unroot / unmodify a JB handset is to use TriangleAway to reset the flashcounter, then boot straight into download mode, patch stock rom or factory reset if stock rom is installed and you only rooted (like me).

Only then it will likely stick to "unmodified".

Yeah I did use triangle away and then flash official rom. It's fine now after reboot. Oh well I ain't fussed as long as it let's me update to 4.1.2 when it's released

I actually had to do the same this weekend with a friends phone - needs to go back to Samsung so had to unroot. So yea - needed root to Triangle Away, then shutdown, used odin to re-apply stiock rom and after factory reset its all golden.

Having said that - if all you care is 4.1.2 then you can flash a stock rom - newest ones are always at samsung-updates.com ..

Hello guys, my s3 is not from any samsung authorized store in Bangladesh but from a person who imports phone from Singapore. When I tried to update my android version (currently 4.1.2) it says that the phone has been modified & update unavailable. Can u pls tell me how to update it properly in the easiest way, caz I'm not tech-savvy. So solution for the same problem in this forum sounded very hard to me. Pls help me out.
