International texting question

I have a friend who like me lives in the USA, but she's moving to Canada for college. She's on Sprint and going to get an international plan for her phone. I have a Razr Maxx and no international plan. If I use an app like text plus or viber, will I avoid all extra fees that I would have to pay if I texted normally on the voice network?

Whatsapp, Text Plus, Viber, etc all use data to send your message. Think of it like instant messenger for your phone. By the way, to my knowledge, Sprint and Verizon both have free texting to and from Canada while in the US or Canada. You should call to double check though.

Yeah I know the basics of how those VOIP apps work, but is there a way without calling customer service to check current charges that could be adding up before the bill is finalized?
