Okay, this is really frustrating me. Since some recent update, Facebook and Messenger are both giving me notifications by shoving a banner-type thing into my face that covers up 1/4 of the screen, even if it will cover up controls for the app I'm using, and if I swipe it away in order to get back to what I was in the middle of, it doesn't store it in the notification list -- it destroys it completely. Why can't it work like *every* other app on the phone where notifications just go inoffensively into the background and wait until I'm ready to look at them? I've looked all over the Googles and can't seem to find one single thing about this issue. Can anyone help me? Thanks in advance!

PS does anyone actually *like* this in-your-face, look-at-now-or-I-will-kill-it nonsense?

Have you recently updated to Android 5 (Lollipop)? That sounds like the new "heads up" notifications Google introduced, with Facebook assuming that all of its notifications are "high priority".

If you go into Settings > Notifications > App Notifications and select the app you can find options for an individual app's notifications. However, I expect it will let you disable notifications completely but not to tone them down (I don't see that in my settings anyway, but it's always worth checking as phones differ).

I've just installed FB to check, but don't see any option to change the notification type within the app (damn but that is one bloated app! 150MB without any data??).

I was anticipating problems with the new style notifications, but haven't had any. However, I don't use the Facebook app, and if it does that then I don't see myself starting either.
